STEM is the most marketed category in Triangle summer camps. Robotics, coding, engineering, science โ almost every camp has added some version of it to their lineup. Most are good. Some are great. A few are just badges on a brochure.
Here's how to tell the difference.
What actually matters
Student-to-instructor ratio. This is the one number that predicts quality more than anything else. For hands-on STEM work, you want 8:1 or lower. Above 12:1, kids spend more time waiting than doing. Ask directly: "What's your ratio for this specific program?" (Not the whole camp โ the specific session.)
What they build vs. what they learn. Ask "what will my kid make or build this week?" If the answer is vague โ "they'll explore concepts in coding" โ that's a warning sign. Strong STEM camps can tell you exactly what a student will create: a game, a robot, an app, a bridge that holds X pounds. The project IS the curriculum.
Instructor background. Are instructors teachers, college students, or working engineers? None of those is automatically better โ but knowing who's in the room matters. A retired engineer running a 6-kid robotics program is different from a 19-year-old counselor reading off a curriculum guide.
Age grouping. "Ages 8โ14" is too wide for meaningful STEM instruction. Kids at 8 and 14 are not doing the same things. Camps that group tightly (8โ10, 11โ13) run better programs because the instruction can actually match the level.
What doesn't matter as much as you think
Brand name. The biggest programs in the Triangle aren't always the best ones. Some of the strongest STEM camps in Raleigh and Durham are small, run by former teachers, and never show up in a Google search. They fill by word of mouth.
Curriculum badges and certifications. "Python certified" and "endorsed by X" are marketing. What matters is whether kids engage, make something, and want to come back. Talk to parents whose kids attended, not the camp's homepage.
High-end equipment. A camp that gives kids a $4,000 robot kit to assemble by following a manual is less educational than one that gives them $30 in parts and says "build something that moves." Struggle is where learning happens.
Good questions to ask before booking
- What does a typical day look like, hour by hour?
- What will my kid have made or built by end of week?
- What's the ratio for this session specifically?
- How do you handle kids who move faster (or slower) than the group?
- What happens if my kid has already done this curriculum at another camp?
That last question matters more than most parents realize. A kid who did the same Scratch coding curriculum two summers in a row learned nothing the second time. Good camps have advancement tracks. Ask if one exists.
Triangle-specific options worth knowing
The Triangle has serious STEM infrastructure โ NC State, Duke, UNC, RTI, and dozens of tech companies means there's actual talent running camps here that you won't find in most markets.

- Independent operators โ small, specific, and often the most hands-on of anything available
Filter by STEM on The Kid Planner and sort by age range. Look for the ones with a specific description of what kids build โ that's usually a reliable signal.
